There are some things a dog just can’t shake. A good bone, tender loving care, and jumping up on the couch. In fact, my dog is sitting on the top part of the couch right now watching me type this, next to her bone. It doesn’t take much to make a dog happy. And that was the exact notion behind one Illinois animal shelter when they reached out to the community to bring something special to their homeless dogs.
The Knox County Humane Society in Galesburg, Illinois had the brilliant idea of asking people to donate any unwanted chairs and furniture for the animals to lounge on in their cages.
Since this video hit the internet earlier this month it’s gone viral. And what’s even better: other shelters are chiming in for their homeless dogs! And, the icing on the cake is– adoption rates are up!
Erin Buckmaster, the volunteer executive director for the Knox County Humane Society, said in the video below, “It’s been a wonderful thing for the dogs, they love it.”
The idea of collecting old chairs came when a pup named Buster was returned to the shelter following a divorce. Little Buster loved sitting on the staff’s chairs. So, they figured the rest of the dogs would like it too.
Sharon Ervin is a local community member who volunteered her time to collect chairs for the shelter. Ervin said the chairs are a small luxury that makes a huge difference.
Ervin says in the video below, “A home environment or a little comfort…So many abused, so many homeless, so many strays…there are so many dogs in need.”
